Flirting With My New Toy

Last week, Fin asked me why I never posted any of my photos online and I confessed that I have barely picked up my camera this year. Feeling bad about it (as much for my camera as for myself and those who like seeing my photos) I have been carrying my camera around with me everywhere for the first time in months this weekend, inspired by my new bit of kit.

It was never even supposed to happen: John was after a new lens, and so, I took him shopping for one when he visited me in Derby a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, the only photography shop still open when we looked didn’t have any in, so he decided to buy one when he got home to Liverpool instead.
I asked out out of curiosity how much the lens he was after (incidentally, I have been after the very same one for a while) actually was - and their price was lower than on Amazon. So, quoted a lower price and the ability to come in store and pick up the lens when it arrived instead of relying on Royal Mail, I furnished myself with a Canon 50mm ƒ1.8 - which happens to be a very good portrait lens, and my mojo at the moment is full force behind… people.

Heh, good to know I have my uses ;)

It is indeed a very nice lens. I love having something so quick, and which gives such nice soft backgrounds.

What body do you put that on?

I’ve recently got the 85mm f1.8 Nikkor for the D200 and I love it, the ability to pick a candid out without getting in peoples face is fantastic and the shallow depth of field and great bokeh really frames them. As I hate using flash in those situations the speed really helps, not quite as much as the amazing f1.4 Nikkor I borrowed off a friend first; you can feel that sucking photons out of the air…

The only downside is that at 135mm equivalent on the D200 it’s not great for close work so I’m going to grab the 50mm f1.4 at some point.

Out of curiosity, how much was it?

I’m looking for a fast 50mm for another format, and I’ve been surprised (and not in a nice way) at the cost.
